What is the best time to visit Rusutsu for you?

Depending upon what you are looking for from your holiday there may be a time of the season that suits you best. Read on to find out when you should book your holiday.

December

The start of the season is a beautiful time in Rusutsu. As the first snow falls the area starts to transform into a winter wonderland. The bamboo is gradually buried by the famous Rusutsu powder and the trees at the summit of Isola receive their coat of snow.

If you are looking to experience snow for the first time, learn to ski, or just enjoy the festive season then December is the perfect time for you to find yourself in Rusutsu. The soft Hokkaido snow is great for learning to ski or snowboard, and with an amazing team of internationally accredited snow-sports instructors Rusutsu Ski School is well equipped to help you on your way.

December is also full of possibilities outside of the ski slopes. The Activities Centre can provide you with an abundance of fun options to entertain the entire family, including snowmobiling, snow-rafting, cross country skiing, and much much more. December also features exciting events, such as the Christmas Eve and New Years fireworks and skiing displays that will enthral both adults and children.

January

Come the New Year and Rusutsu has usually received over 4-5 metres of snowfall already! This means that January sees the off-piste skiing truly start to open up. The bamboo is completely vanished and the powder covered slopes of Isola and East Mountains are just begging to be ridden over. The consistently colder temperatures and frequent weather systems mean that it is rare for a day to pass by without snowfall – meaning if you are a powder-hound then January is the month for you!

Opportunities like the First Tracks program run during many days in January. For a small fee you can beat the crowds and arrive at the top of Isola at 9AM – this gives you at least half an hours head start on the hordes of people coming from East Mountain. We love this option at Ski Rusutsu!

February

Much the same as January in Rusutsu! Again the classic Hokkaido weather machine continues to operate on full capacity and we see even more snowfall. By the end of February Rusutsu will almost certainly have seen over 10 metres of snowfall.

The incredibly quantities of snow are not just ideal for the hardcore powder fiends, they also make the trails of Rusutsu a delight to ski. With fantastic grooming facilities Rusutsu is famous throughout Hokkaido for turning out some beautiful groomed trails. This is perfect for the intermediate and beginner skiers who will find the snow excellent for learning and improving.

March

Spring skiing is an amazing time in Rusutsu. A bit of a lottery if you are searching for powder (come in January or Febraury to guarantee that!), instead you have a high likelihood of bright sunshine and classical bluebird days. The warmer temperatures mean that the snow will be soft and slushy, almost as playful as the powder! Around this time the tree skiing becomes too dangerous and we recommend sticking to the trails and enjoying the sun.

With the better visibility come the scenic views that Rusutsu is renowned for. You will regularly see Mt. Yotei from all areas of the resort, while from the top of Mt. Isola you can catch views of the volcanic Lake Toya and even the Pacific Ocean. Grab your camera and get snapping with a scenic tour to the peak!
